Indie August Participants!

There are a bunch of lovely ladies who are going to participate (in whole or in part) in Indie August and I want to share their lovely manis with you so you can see how much fun this is! :) I'm especially excited because many of these ladies have altered my guide to their collections, I can't wait to see their manis! <3

In each blog post over the next month, I will reference this page so that anyone can easily click on it and visit other participants pages.

If you wish to be added to this page, please send me your info or comment below! The more the merrier! And no, you do NOT have to do a daily mani to be included. Even if you can only manage a few of them, that's awesome! <3

August is Indie Month!!! A New Daily Mani Challenge!

Ok. I had SO MUCH fun doing the June is Julep Month mani challenge that I decided to do another! I took July off to rest my nails, they were kind of a mess from the Julep challenge. For August I decided to give "indie" polishes some love -- love they have earned and totally deserve. What's an "indie" polish?? "Indie" is short for "independent" and is a polish created in small batches by an individual (or a small group) and sold online. Sometimes it's a girl in her kitchen mixing the polishes by hand, in other cases the production is a bit bigger. They are generally pricier than your average drugstore brand -- but they are the result of a lot of creativity and hard work.

I have created the following chart to guide my Indie August by listing various brands that I currently own.

Note that this is not an absolute list that you must follow!! This is simply a guideline. Some people have a lot of indies, others have only a few. The point is to use some indie polishes -- give them a try or use some of those untrieds (or even well-loved) polishes in your stash. There are a few very loose "rules" that I'm going to go by:
  • Follow the chart. I created it based on my indie stash so these are the brands I'm using! Feel free to sub in a different brand!
  • Try to use an untried polish (using what you have cuts down on spending and hoarding polishes! lol). You can also use an absolute favourite polish.
  • Do a daily mani. Crazy, yes. I have the time this month to focus on this. If you don't, maybe do one a week or whenever you can?
  • Other products (base coat, topcoat, cuticle oil, etc) are recommended to be by indie makers, but do not have to be!! I don't have a lot of non-polish indie nail products so I doubt I'll be using any.
  • Write an honest review.
  • Link to the polish maker in your blog post or IG or Facebook or wherever you post. This helps others find that brand and helps promote polish makers!
Some of you may argue about whether certain brands on my list are truly "indie" or not (eg. Model's Own, Lime Crime, or Nubar). In some cases they sit on the border, in my opinion. They are not readily available locally (at least not here!) in stores and they have to be purchased through distributors or directly from the maker. Also, I do not have copious numbers of indie polishes to make up a truly indie month -- but I still think it is important to do this. It's important to give love and attention to indie makers and to help those new to indie polishes learn more about them!!

I know of a few people who are also participating with me (in whole or in part), which is awesome! I don't expect everyone to commit to a daily mani, even if you can manage a few, that's perfect! The idea is to have fun, share some incredible manis, and use those dust-covered (or half-empty!) indie polishes!

For those of you who wish to be linked (blog, IG, Facebook page, Twitter, Tumbler, etc) for your participation -- please let me know and I will add you to the "Participants" page (to be posted soon!). You can email me your info (we.didnt.miss.it (at) gmail (dot) com), comment below, or find me on Facebook (you guys know who I am!). On Instagram I am: miss_tina and I will be posting all my daily manis on this blog, on my IG (using #indieaugustchallenge and #indieaugust), on my new blog Twitter, and on my new blog Facebook Page. Feel free to post yours wherever -- really no rules!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Julep - Flora

I desperately needed to do my nails and wanted something bright (how odd!). I was going through my Julep polishes because I am still a little pouty/sad I skipped July. I DID pick a box for August though! (Polish Lover's Upgrade + Sushmita + Amy [love the colour, want a backup!] + new plum liner).

Anyway, decided to go with an untried from my April Maven box - Flora.

Nail Polish Canada - The Great Polish Giveaway Of 2014!

Wow! This is super exciting! I have ordered a million times from Nail Polish Canada and love them already for their speedy shipping, awesome selection, and fantastic customer service (oh yeah, and the lollipops tucked into every order is a very sweet touch!). But now they have this amazing contest where they have partnered with Cirque Colors, NCLA, and piCture pOlish to award one lucky winner with up to 200 polishes!

Another cool part of the contest is how these polishes are chosen for the contest -- Nail Polish Canada is involving polish bloggers in selecting the brand/shade. Are you a polish blogger that wants in on this?? Click here to find out more! The more bloggers involved, the bigger the prize! Naturally, I HAD TO pick a colour! What did I choose?? Well, as many of you know, I absolutely LOVE red polish. My all-time favourite is "Rodeo Drive Royalty" by NCLA. It's one of those stunning, super-sexy reds. You really can't go wrong with this one!

A few swatches -- scroll down to enter the Nail Polish Canada contest!!

Okay, here's the deal with the contest. It's open now and ends August 15th, 2014 at midnight EST. Open to US & Canada, 18 years of age & over, void where prohibited, etc (for full terms, click "Terms & Conditions" under the Rafflecopter entry thingy). There are a few ways you can get entries. (1) You can click here to go to the Nail Polish Canada contest page, (2) You can visit ALL the blogs contributing their favourite polish shade (like mine!) and enter via the Rafflecopter widget on their blog entry about the contest.

If you go to the Nail Polish Canada Contest Page you can enter the contest AND see the prize, which is pretty awesome! Visiting the blogs is pretty fun too -- there are a lot of amazing and creative ladies out there. :)

Sparkles For Ayla - Dior's Princess

Recently while reading through my Instagram feed, I came across this:

I didn't know who Selena was and I don't know the whole story about what happened, but this dear woman lost her baby in utero at 38 weeks. I can't imagine anything more heartbreaking. :'(
So as part of the polish community & as a woman showing respect and love to another, I decided to have pink sparkly nails today in honour of baby Ayla. For her, I chose Dior's Princess -- aptly named and an untried in my stash.

Coming in August! Indie Month Polish Challenge!

Okay, so doing the June is Julep Month mani challenge was … well… challenging. But it was also a lot of fun and I loved digging into my untrieds. I found a lot that I really loved. I'm taking a mani challenge break in July because my nails need a bit of R&R… but I wanted to come up with a new mani challenge… so for August, I'm going to do an August is Indie Month challenge! I have SO many indie polishes and they are amazing -- so this is a great way to promo all the hard work & love that our indie polish makers put into their creations. :)

I've created a preliminary chart that I will go by. The finals details will be posted August 1, 2014. I think there are a few other bloggers that would like to join me. The rules for this one will be a bit looser/less restrictive just because indies are less common in the average polish household -- and since some of them require non-indie brand products to do the mani (like topcoats/basecoats, "undies", etc). Also, not having these particular brands doesn't mean you can't do the challenge -- just sub in what you DO have! Or if you have 3 kinds of one brand, sub those in for the ones you don't. It's about giving indies some love, not about rigid rules! I just based this preliminary chart on a quick glance at my stash. I am leaning towards untrieds only but I'm going to used some previously tried also. :)

Here's the preliminary chart:
Some of you may disagree with what constitutes an "indie" polish -- to me it's a brand that is not commonly found in a drugstore or department store. An indie polish to me is also one that is made on a very small scale -- in some cases it's a one-woman show mixing up the polish in her kitchen, in other cases there is a bit of out-sourcing. In all cases, they are harder to find -- hidden gems in the polish world. I think they need some love!! Some are very popular and easy to find, others are smaller to get your hands on -- but hopefully you'll see something you like and will be inspired to explore the indie world further! (I will be posting direct links to each brand with each mani post). Indie polishes are often more expensive than mainstream brands, but they are unique, not tested on animals, and 3-free (if not 5-free). They are worth it!

Like I said, the chart I made is preliminary and not necessarily the final one I will go by once August hits. I'm super excited and can't wait to showcase these brands!

Zoya - Belinda

I know it's been a whole week since my last post -- I think I needed to give my nails a big rest after doing the 40 manis I did during June is Julep Month! My nails and cuticles were trashed and are slowly recovering. I cut them back and I have been using Duri Rejuvacote 2 daily. The version 2 is 3-free and is best for more sensitive people -- since I react to a lot of things I went with this one. I have no idea if it's just as good as Duri 1. I guess we'll see how my nails do!

I did this mani yesterday. Belinda was in my untrieds pile for a few months. Since cutting my nails short, I prefer darker colours. They seem more flattering on shorter nails. Maybe that's just me? Anyway, onto the mani!
